TL;DR: In short, the Aztec have what I think is the most solid early game of any civ combined with some solid buffs that persist throughout the entire game and only get stronger as you go more wide, remember every city you have is one that the AI does not. Since the nature of the Aztec buffs means that there is virtually no penalty for going wide you can go as wide as possible and the crazy.
